Doser or not doser - what to choose?

A common question we get is if the coffee grinder should have dosing mechanism or not. Look for example at Rancilio Rocky which is available both with and without dosing mechanism.

What is the best? What is the advantage with the dosing mechanism function? We will now do our best to sort this out.

Grinder without doser

A coffee grinder without dosage grinds coffee and leads the freshly ground coffee into a container or via an outlet from the grinder, e.g. Rancilio Rocky no doser and Eureka Mignon no doser.

The grinders without doser is usually designed so that you keep the espresso machine's filter holder directly under the grinders outlet and thereby grind the coffee straight into the filter.

A grinder of this type is good for domestic use where tho consumption of coffee is relatively low compared to professional use. You always get fresh ground coffee as you grind the amount you need for that specific occassion. You will quickly learn how to grind the amount you need for one or two cups of filter.

Grinder with doser

A coffee grinder with dosing mechanism grinds the coffee into a dosing container, e.g. Rancilio Rocky Doser and Eureka Mignon Doser. The first step is to grind the coffee, which then ends up in the dosing container that sits on the front of the grinder. Step two is to dose the coffee straight into your filter holder, press the handle on the dosing tank.

The dosing container has wedge-like compartments in which the pre-ground coffee is collected, each of these compartments is a dose of coffee. When you press the handle the dosing tank rotates and a dose of ground coffee is put forward to the outlet and down inte the filter of your filter holder. The dispensing container must be stuffed with ground coffee for this to work well.

At a cafe, there is a need to quickly fill a filter holder with the same amount of coffee every time, a container of ground coffee is quickly consumed at a cafe, a coffee grinder with dosing mechanism is therefore an excellent choice for professional use.
